CERAMIC SAMPLES ARCHIVE: A COLLECTION OF CERAMICS PRODUCED IN CENTRAL-SOUTHERN ITALY

Ceramic samples have been collected from several archaeological sites and shipwrecks. The purpose of this work is to provide a visual comparative dataset of the main ceramic productions in Central and Southern Italy (especially Southern Etruria, Lazio, Campania and Sicily); moreover, it is aimed at favoring the collation between site materials and shipwrecks. Sampling has been centered on pottery production sites. This is, indeed, the only way to build a solid basis for the identification of fabrics and for further researches focused on detecting ceramics provenance (with the aid of archaeometric analyses). The samples, from different periods, are organized according to Region/Site and Class, but the bulk of the pottery comes from Ostia, Roma, Southern Lazio, Ischia/Bay of Naples and is dated between the 4th BC and the 2nd century AD.

The archive includes also many samples of amphorae and ceramics from shipwrecks sunk nearby Sicily, Southern France and in the Iberian Peninsula. At present, the collection is being housed at the Department of Antiquities of the University of Rome “Sapienza”. Chemical and mineralogical analyses have been carried out on a large number of the collected samples. The results are being published in several papers (see the tab Papers in the website).
