THE GATHERING OF CERAMIC SAMPLES PRODUCED IN CENTRAL-SOUTHERN ITALY

The collection of ceramic samples from several archaeologic sites and shipwrecks is under way. The purpose of this work is to provide a comparative set of data regarding the main ceramic productions of central-southern Italy (in particular, southern Etruria, Lazio, Campania and Sicily); moreover, it is aimed at favouring the collation between site materials and shipwrecks before possible laboratory analyses are carried out.
The samples are related to different periods, but particularly large is the number of the ceramics coming from Ostia, Roma, southern Lazio, Ischia/the Bay of Naples dated between the 4th century BC and the 2nd AD.

v So far information relating to Etruria, Lazio, Campania and Sicily has been collected (see map beside).

Project's sites

Numerous are also the samples of ceramics and amphorae of central-southern Tyrrhenian origin from shipwrecks found in Sicily, southern France and in the Iberian Peninsula.
At present, the collection is being housed at Università “La Sapienza” of Rome (Faculty of Humanities).
